How to actually pick the right infrared heater for your bathroom
Most people think that when it comes to heaters, more power is always better. But here’s the thing: if you just grab the highest wattage lamp on the shelf, you’re probably just wasting money—or worse, frying your equipment. It’s all about the size of the room.
Getting the size right
If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room—something under 4 square meters—you don’t need a powerhouse. A 400W to 600W lamp is plenty. It gives you that concentrated beam of warmth that makes you feel cozy without turning the room into a sauna. Now, if you’ve got a bigger master bath (think 6 to 12 square meters), you’ll want to step up to 800W or 1200W. Why? Because if you put a weak 400W lamp in a big room, the heat just vanishes into the air before it even hits your skin. On the flip side, putting a 1200W beast in a tiny stall is a bad move. The thermostat will kick in and out constantly, which wears out the filament and kills the bulb way faster than it should.
The “Instant Heat” factor
One of the best things about shortwave infrared is that it doesn’t bother warming up the air. It goes straight for the target—you. This is a lifesaver in bathrooms because humidity usually sucks the heat right out of the room. With these lamps, you feel the warmth the second you step under them. But a quick heads-up on the installation: check your ceiling height. If your ceiling is high (around 2.5 meters), you’ll need a bit more wattage to get that same “toasty” feeling as you would with a lower ceiling. Just make sure your wiring and circuit breakers can handle the extra draw so you don’t run into any voltage issues.
A smarter way to stay warm
If you want to be really efficient, don’t treat the whole bathroom as one big zone. Try putting a high-wattage lamp right over the shower where you need it most, and maybe some smaller, lower-wattage ones near the vanity. It stops the heater from fighting the cold draft coming from your exhaust fans. At the end of the day, it’s a simple balance. Too much power and you’re burning cash. Too little and you’re still shivering. Just match the wattage to the space and you’re golden.
