
Why we’re ditching old-school lamp warmers for IR heaters
You know those old bathroom heat lamps? The ones that basically feel like a tanning bed for your shoulders? They’ve been around forever, but they’re starting to disappear. It’s not because they look dated. It’s because we’ve found a better way to stay warm without worrying if the whole thing is going to short out the second you take a steamy shower. The secret is in the heat. Old heaters try to warm up the air around you, or they blast you with blinding light just to make you feel a bit of warmth. It’s inefficient. Infrared (IR) is different. It sends out waves that hit your skin and the walls directly. You don’t have to wait for the entire room to heat up—you just feel it immediately. Plus, because it’s so direct, you can actually use less power and still feel cozy. Let’s talk about the steam. Bathrooms are brutal on electronics. All that humidity finds every little gap in a heater’s casing, which leads to rust, corrosion, and—eventually—a dead heater. That’s where the “IP rating” comes in. Think of it as a shield. Modern IR units are built to be airtight. We seal the chassis and use connectors that don’t care about moisture. It keeps the insides dry, which means the heating elements don’t burn out nearly as fast. The catch (because there’s always one). When you seal something tight to keep water out, the heat has nowhere to go. If you cram a high-power heater into a tiny, airtight box, things get hot. Really hot. This is why the materials matter. You need a housing that can handle that internal heat without warping or melting. One last tip:Check your zones. If you’re putting a heater right next to the shower head, you need a much higher waterproof rating than if it’s across the room by the towel rack. If you put a “Zone 2” heater in a “Zone 1” spot, you’re probably going to trip your breaker during a hot shower. Just match the rating to where it’s going, and you’re set.
