
Can a Lamp Swap Actually Boost Your SMI SR 12 Output?
If you’re running an older SMI SR 12, you’ve probably noticed it. The cycles aren’t as consistent as they used to be. The bottles aren’t coming out quite right. It’s easy to assume the machine is just getting old and has hit its limit. But usually, the mechanical timing is still fine. The real culprit? Your infrared lamps. They lose their punch over time, and that’s where your bottleneck is hiding. The secret is in the heat. We build our replacement lamps to push more energy into every millimeter of the tube. By switching to a higher-density halogen quartz, you’re basically hitting the PET preform with a more intense blast of radiant energy. The result? The plastic hits that perfect blowing temperature way faster. This gives you two choices. You can shorten the heating cycle and crank up the bottles per minute (BPM), or you can keep your current speed but drop the oven temperature to save on power. Either way, you win. Will it actually fit? Yes. These are drop-in replacements. We use standard R7s or SK15 connectors, so you won’t have to spend your weekend rewiring the entire control panel. We also “dope” the quartz glass to shift the emission toward shortwave IR. That’s a fancy way of saying the heat penetrates deeper into the PET wall, and it does it faster. Plus, we know these machines shake. A lot. So we fuse the electrodes to make sure the filament doesn’t sag or burn out the moment things get intense. A quick word of caution. More heat means more current. If you go with a lamp that has a significantly higher wattage than what the factory installed, do yourself a favor: check your contactors and wiring. You really don’t want to melt a terminal block because the amp rating in your cabinet couldn’t keep up. And while you’re at it, blow the dust out of your cooling fans. If you’re putting more heat into the oven, you need to get that heat out of there, or you’ll risk warping the machine frame over time. It’s a simple swap, but it makes a world of difference.
