
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters from Becoming a Hazard
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is basically like inviting a fight between electricity and steam. We all know water and power don’t mix. One tiny leak or a bit of condensation landing on a live terminal, and you’ve got a short circuit on your hands. To stop that from happening, we focus on three main things. First, the seals. You can’t just throw these in a plastic box and hope for the best. We use heavy-duty silicone gaskets and IP-rated seals everywhere a wire enters the unit. The heating element itself lives inside a quartz tube that’s completely airtight. If steam manages to sneak inside that tube? The filament pops almost instantly. It’s a brutal way to find out your seal failed. Then there’s the wiring. We use thick, heat-resistant cables with double insulation. The trick here is the routing. You have to keep the wires far away from the actual heat zone, otherwise, the jacket starts to melt over time. And please, for the love of everything, make sure every ceiling mount has a dedicated earth ground. We bond the chassis directly to the building’s grounding system. That way, if something goes wrong, the breaker trips immediately. You want the power to die, not the fixture to become live. Here’s the tricky part: The balance. If you seal a unit too tight to keep the water out, you trap the heat inside. That’s a recipe for frying your internal driver or melting your wires. It’s a bit of a tightrope walk. You need an IP rating that blocks the spray but still has a thermal vent to let the hot air breathe. One last thing. If you’re wiring several of these in a row, keep an eye on your voltage drop. Overloading a circuit in a damp room just makes the wires degrade faster. **The golden rule?**Wire it all into a GFCI. That way, the second a leak is detected, the power cuts out. Fast.
