That’s because infrared heaters don’t bother with the air—they just beam heat directly onto you and your tools. It’s a great system, but manually toggling them is a pain. That’s where adding a smart gateway comes in. It turns a basic heater into something you can control from your phone or a schedule.
How to actually get it working
Here’s the thing: these heaters pull a massive amount of power. You can’t just plug them into a cheap smart plug and call it a day. If you do, you’ll likely smell smoke pretty quickly. Instead, we use heavy-duty contactors or smart relays. Think of the relay as the middleman. Your phone sends a tiny, low-voltage signal (via Wi-Fi or Zigbee), and that signal tells the heavy-duty relay to snap shut.**Boom.**Full power hits the elements, and you’ve got warmth in seconds.
The trick to getting the temperature right
Not all heaters are the same. Short-wave ones hit peak heat almost instantly. But there’s a common mistake people make: they put the temperature sensor up high. Don’t do that. Heat rises. If the sensor is near the ceiling, it’ll think the room is toasty and shut everything off while your toes are still frozen. Put your sensors down where you actually work. That way, the system stays on until you are warm.
A few things to watch out for
Smart tech is great, but it adds another part that can break. If you’re running a big array of 2kW lamps, make sure your contactor is rated for the total amperage. If it’s undersized, it’ll burn out. Simple as that. Plus, you might run into “hunting.” That’s when the heater flicks on and off every few seconds because the temperature is hovering right on the edge. It’s annoying and wears out your gear. The fix? Set a “hysteresis gap” of about 2 or 3 degrees. It gives the system some breathing room, keeps your power draw steady, and stops the hardware from clicking like a typewriter all day.
