
Why we put our bathroom heaters through hell before they hit your home
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, sudden temperature spikes, and water vapor hanging in the air. It’s basically a sauna for your hardware. We can’t just build these infrared lamps, box them up, and hope for the best. That’s how you get products that die after a month. Instead, we put every batch through “damp-heat aging tests.” It sounds fancy, but really, we’re just trying to break them on purpose so they don’t break in your house.
The battle against steam
Inside these lamps, there’s a tungsten filament tucked inside a quartz envelope. It’s a delicate setup. If the seal fails for even a second, oxygen and moisture sneak in and—pop—the lamp is dead. Steam is sneaky. It finds the tiniest gaps in the base or the connectors. We simulate years of bathroom humidity in a few hundred hours. We crank the moisture up to the absolute limit just to see where the leaks are. If it can survive our lab, it can survive your morning shower.
The “breathing” problem
It’s not just about the filament, though. Moisture loves to attack electrical pins and housing materials. Here is the tricky part: when you turn the lamp on, it goes from room temperature to scorching hot in seconds. Then it cools down. This constant cycling makes the materials expand and contract. We call it a “breathing” effect. As the lamp cools, it can actually suck moisture deeper into the assembly. If we didn’t pick the right materials, that’s exactly when you’d get a short circuit.
Finding the sweet spot
You might think, “Just seal the whole thing in thick plastic!” But we can’t. If we seal it too tight, the internal circuitry overheats and burns out. It’s a constant tug-of-war between keeping the water out and letting the heat escape. Our aging tests tell us if we’ve found that balance. If a lamp fails, we go back to the drawing board—maybe we tweak the gasket or try a better grade of sealant. It’s a lot of work upfront, but it beats dealing with angry customers and expensive recalls later.
