
How to Pick the Right Heat Lamp for Your Bathroom
Nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. But if you just grab the most powerful heat lamp you can find, you might end up turning your bathroom into a sauna—or worse, tripping a breaker. Getting the wattage right is all about matching the lamp to the size of your room.
Size Matters
Bathrooms are tricky. Between the cold tiles and the exhaust fan sucking out the warmth, you lose heat fast. If you’re dealing with a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 250W to 400W shortwave lamp is plenty. Trust me, don’t go overkill here. If you put a 600W+ unit in a tiny space, you’re just wasting electricity and wearing out the lamp faster because the heat has nowhere to go. For those big master baths (8m² to 12m²), you’ve got a bit more work to do. You’ll probably want a few 600W units or one heavy-duty array. The secret? Spread them out. There’s nothing worse than standing in one “hot spot” feeling scorched while your toes are still freezing.
Watch Your Head
Here is the thing about infrared: it doesn’t really heat the air. It heats you. It’s like the sun hitting your skin on a winter day. Because of that, distance is everything. If you mount a high-powered lamp too close to a low ceiling, you might actually scorch the paint or melt the mounting bracket. Give the lamp some breathing room. You need that headspace so the heat can move and the hardware doesn’t overheat.
Power vs. Patience
Higher wattage means you feel the heat almost instantly. An 800W lamp is fast. Really fast. But there’s a catch. Those big lamps pull a lot of juice the moment you flip the switch. If your electrical panel is already struggling or you’re installing four or five units at once, you might blow a fuse. If your wiring is a bit older or your panel is nearly full, just go with a few lower-wattage lamps. You’ll still get the warmth, but you’ll spread the electrical load and keep your breakers happy.
